“Two activists went to bring tents and blankets to the demonstrators and never came back. Omar Kadhim Ali Al-Amery and Salman Khaiallah Salman Al-mansoori went this morning to Kadhmiya, where it was their last known location, to buy tents and supplies for the winter for the protesters in Tahrir square. They never came back to the square and their phones were turned off at 3:30 pm. We do not know whether they were kidnapped or arrested by the government. But what we do know is that Salman and Omar have never hurt anyone in their lives, and since the demonstrations started, their main role was in keeping the demonstrations peaceful through advocacy and providing food and supplies to the square. To the government, we say, stop arresting our young sons using false allegations, your role is and will always be, protecting the right of nonviolent protesting and peaceful protesters. To the kidnappers, we ask you to let Omar and Salman go. they have not done anything to harm you but raising the Iraqi flags and keeping the demonstrations from turning into violent ones.”
Questo il testo di un comunicato diffuso ieri dalla rete Iraqi Civil Society Solidarity Initiative-ICSSI che raccoglie e coordina molte delle organizzazioni e dei singoli cittadini iracheni che da mesi protestano per le strade di tutto il Paese chiedendo un cambiamento.
A caro prezzo. Sono almeno 400 le vittime della repressione delle manifestazioni iniziate il 1 ottobre scorso e che hanno ottenuto le dimissioni dell’ex primo ministro Adel Abdul Mahdi il 29 novembre. In attesa dell’incarico a un nuovo premier, Mahdi e il suo gabinetto resta in carica per gli affari correnti, ma la tensione è molto alta, perché i cittadini chiedono la fine dell’influenza dell’Iran sul Paese.
In questo clima feroce, sono iniziati arresti arbitrari che sono molto simili a veri e propri rapimenti.
Salman, come molti altri attivisti, è stato fermato e nessuno riesce a comunicare con lui.
Salman è una delle anime della Save the Tigris and Marshes Campaign, un’iniziativa della società civile irachena che si batte per l’ambiente e per la salvaguardia dei fiumi iracheni e delle paludi del delta degli stessi, per difenderli dalle grandi opere che impattano in modo devastante sulle popolazioni locali.
Salman era con WaterGrabbing a Suleymania, nei mesi scorsi, al Mesopotamian Water Forum. La sua energia e il suo sorriso rendono ancora più dolorosa questa mancanza di notizie.
Che Salman e tutti gli altri attivisti vengano rilasciati immediatamente. Se ha un senso la devastazione civile che è seguita all’invasione dell’Iraq nel 2003, possa essere quello di mettere pressione sul governo di Baghdad per rilasciare immediatamente le persone arrestate arbitrariamente.
